Free & Open to the PublicYeah, I’ve heard that bureaucracy is one of the big things holding it back here. That said, councils change their tune remarkably quickly if the popular opinion shifts against them — see the way most have done a total 180 on street art since the public got behind it.

@STREATmelbourne that’s good news! Now the laneways are such ridiculously expensive real estate, it really is the next logical step to keep the city’s culinary scene kicking along.

@claire OK, fair point, checked out their menu, and it was $15-$18 for three. Memory clouded by overpriced tequila and the fact that I’d just come back from a week of eating at San Francisco taquerias.

Hey Ruth, great article. I agree that it would be fantastic for Melbourne to get a proper street cart scene (though to be fair to Mamasita, the tacos there are $5 or $6 each, not $15!), it would be great if local government would be more supportive of initiatives like STREAT.

Thanks for the review. It’s true that it’s hard to get a permit for street trade in Melbourne right now, but that might change, because the Council is in session deliberating on this matter as we speak. There’s more of street trade to come I reckon– it’s a natural, given our city’s strong affinity to street culture! Thanks for the review, and glad you liked your salad. I tried our Thai pumpkin yesterday for the first time, and I recommend it. It’s vego as well, and thick and spicy.
